14. PERSPECTIVE: OUTSIDE OF THE FITNESS INDUSTRY

WHY: There are no absolutes. This topic is a great way to take a “none” fitness related topic and find value in exploring something new.

Books

WHY: “In this subtle yet accessible book, Haidt gives you the key to understanding the miracle of human cooperation, as well as the curse of our eternal divisions and conflicts. If you’re ready to trade in anger for understanding.”

WHY: The book explores guidelines and useful models for better thinking.

WHY: “In this fascinating and thought provoking book, Nick Lane brings together the latest research findings in this exciting field to show how our growing understanding of mitochondria is shedding light on how complex life evolved, why sex arose, and why we age and die. This understanding is of fundamental importance, both in understanding how we and all other complex life came to be, but also in order to be able to control our own illnesses, and delay our degeneration and death.”

WHY: “The secret to better decision-making is learning things that won’t change. Mastering a small number of versatile concepts with broad applicability enables you to rapidly grasp new areas, identify patterns, and understand how the world works. Don’t waste your time on knowledge with an expiry date - focus on the fundamentals.”

WHY: The book provides a guide of human history and work in quantum physics to look for a deeper order of beauty in nature. Again, this will provide some perspective and possibly change your view of the world.

WHY: The book explores many questions and history on asymmetry. McManus connects the asymmetrical vertebrate evolution to the asymmetric structure of matter. The book considers evidence from anthropology, particle physics, and the history of medicine.

WHY: The book explores the asymmetries of cosmic universe, down to the molecules of life. It’s a unique exposure to developing a macro view and exploration of a world outside of strength and conditioning.

WHY: James Gleick explores how our relationship to information has transformed the very nature of human consciousness. Think about our knowledge about S&C is shared while reading this book. The main concept is how our understanding of information is transforming not only how we look at the world, but how we live.

WHY: I was sitting at dinner during the Intensive II seminar with Bill Hartman and I asked his a question in relation of what it means to be human. Several weeks later, I received this book in the mail from him and it is one of my favorite books. “Status Anxiety can be defined as the constant tension or fear of being perceived as “unsuccessful” by the society in materialistic terms.” In this book, De Botton lays out the causes of and solutions to status anxiety.

WHY: More often than not, life is a cycle of response. Upstream presents practical solutions for preventing problems rather than reacting to them.

WHY: Essentialism is about organizing your life and prioritize your time and effort through systemic discipline.

WHY: “To make the journey into The Power of Now you need to leave your analytical mind and its false created self, the ego, behind. Access to the Now is everywhere - in the body, the silence, and the space all around you. These are the keys to enter a state of inner peace.”

WHY: “From thought leader Brené Brown, a transformative new vision for the way we lead, love, work, parent, and educate that teaches us the power of vulnerability.”

WHY: What is consciousness? “Consciousness is the feeling of what happens-our mind noticing the body's reaction to the world and responding to that experience. Without our bodies there can be no consciousness, which is at heart a mechanism for survival that engages body, emotion, and mind in the glorious spiral of human life.”

WHY: “In Originals he again addresses the challenge of improving the world, but now from the perspective of becoming original: choosing to champion novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battle conformity, and buck outdated traditions. How can we originate new ideas, policies, and practices without risking it all? ”

WHY: “Electricity has shaped the modern world. But how has it affected our health and environment? Over the last 220 years, society has evolved a universal belief that electricity is ‘safe’ for humanity and the planet. Scientist and journalist Arthur Firstenberg disrupts this conviction by telling the story of electricity in a way it has never been told before―from an environmental point of view―by detailing the effects that this fundamental societal building block has had on our health and our planet.”
